Individual and Couples Psychotherapy
“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when they contemplate the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day.”
Albert Einstein
Psychotherapy
I believe psychotherapy is a collaborative venture that can help people lead a fulfilling life and maintain healthy relationships. In our work together I create a judgement-free space where I can understand your personal experience and nurture and support you in your journey towards authenticity and change. If you suffer with states of depression, anxiety, or loneliness, or you feel generally dissatisfied with aspects of your life, through our work together we will explore skills and tools that move you towards growth.
I am a clinical trauma therapist, and earned my Master of Social Work degree from New York University.
I dedicate my time as a therapist working with substance misuse, sexual compulsivity, relationship restoration, trauma and LGBTQ issues. I am a person of color who understands immigration issues and I also speak Portuguese.
I understand how shame affects many of us and its correlation to issues such as addiction and difficulties with intimacy. When working with LGBTQIA+ clients I recognize the importance of using a sex positive and non-shaming approach. I strive to help clients to connect with authenticity and freedom from unhealthy coping behaviors.
Trauma Treatment
Trauma is an emotional response to an event, that could be severe, as sexual, physical, emotional abuse or any event one find threatening or harmful.
A traumatized person can feel a range of emotions both immediately after the event and in the long term. They may feel overwhelmed, helpless, shocked, or have difficulty processing their experiences. Trauma can also cause physical symptoms and affect the way we relate to others.
A person who experienced trauma can feel stuck and overwhelmed a lot of the time. Trauma treatment is a gentle process where one will have the chance to process and renegotiate events from the past. Through approaches such as Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and Somatic Experience one can find tools to help the brain and body address the effects of traumatic events.
